Well it is about time. The White House is going to get solar panels to generate electricity. Years after Ronald Reagan had the solar hot water heating system installed by Jimmy Carter removed to show Americans we were independent and didn’t need solar, President Obama has decided the time has come again for solar on our #1 house. Nice to see the government catching up to the people.
The iconic residence for the president of the United States, as well as a former strip mine in Ohio, will get solar panels in separate, high-profile projects announced Tuesday in the business of getting power from the sun.
The Energy Department will seek out bids to install solar panels capable of generating 5 kilowatts to 15 kilowatts of electricity for the White House.
The system would produce about 19,700 kilowatts per year of power — more than twice the typical consumption of 8,800 kilowatts annually for an average home in Washington D.C., according to government estimates.
“This project reflects President [Barack] Obama’s strong commitment to U.S. leadership in solar energy and the jobs it will create here at home,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “Deploying solar-energy technologies across the country will help America lead the global economy for years to come.” The installation is expected before the spring of next year.
