The Myth of the New “Green”

A compiling of different influential factors in western society has thrown a new word into the regular verbiage of English speakers around the world. The word itself isn’t anything new in terms of speech or meaning but we’ve all been affected by its dramatic influence on society today. “Green” is the topic at hand; the simple color that has been exploited beyond its assumed traits to now encompasses growth, mother earth, and new beginnings for a changing planet.

We could define “green” in relatively simplistic terms, yet the meaning itself is only a small piece of the much larger “green” pie. Global warming culture includes everything from compost trash bins to solar all fall under the simple umbrella category of “green”. The problem is that the definition of “green” itself is evolving every day into a bigger and hard idea to understand.

This comes to the crux of our problem with “green” today – so much speech has invoked this term and yet little return has been had. Rhetoric has used the term to push product rather than solve problems, leading to the creation of completely new technologies to create clean instead of finding a way to work and improve what we have.

Nations and people differ on what the meaning of “green” actually is. New technology is the definition that’s embraced by some, while others argue for finding solutions to the sources we already have. This line in the sand is causing many once public supporters to back off the issue for fear of stepping on toes.

Let’s take a step back and remember that “green” is still a fairly new issue that hasn’t even been fully developed. The divisions caused by trying to define “green” is being created in large part because of businesses, who otherwise would never take an interest, are now trying to tap into this new and desirable market.

The creation of new technology stemming from the “green” revolution is great for the future of our planet but it doesn’t change or help the problems that we face today. These new technologies do a wonderful job of creating clean, carbon neutral energy but they do nothing to help or improve the dirty and inefficient technology that we already have.

Increased energy efficiency is not a new concept or invention but has simply been hidden under the rug of the other predominant environmentally friendly technology today. As an example, our business of making waste heat recovery condensing economizers allows owners of natural gas and LP boilers to improve their preexisting technology which saves them money as well as precious natural resource. By improving your equipment to function at maximum efficiency, you are creating solutions to problems.

New eco-friendly technology is a needed industry for the future of our planet. Our priorities however, must lie with improving the equipment and technology we are already using so that business can reduce emissions, reduce resource consumption, and hopefully improve business profits all at the same time. “Green” is king in today’s economy and the sooner your business can be a part of the solution, you’ll be sure to win.
