As a commercial contractor, I have had experiences with working with green building materials. I have noticed that today, now more than ever, it’s important to take steps to conserve our natural resources. One way to do that is through the use of green building materials, such as seen at the Ritz-Carlton in North Carolina and the Las Vegas Palazzo Hotel & Resort. The other way is to promote green initiatives in the community, such as the Go Green Initiatives and Green America programs.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in North Carolina is one unlike any you have heard before. It features a rooftop garden made especially for its special guests – 100,000 honeybees. Honeybees are important pollinators of a number of different flower, plants and food crops. Much of the honey is used in the hotel restaurant that serves organic food, snacks and drinks for hotel guests. This hotel doesn’t stop there! They also have a special linen program in which guests are able to make an environmental pledge. And, the hotel’s plumbing construction conserves water with low flowing toilets and showerheads.
In Las Vegas, The Palazzo Hotel & Resort is a perfect example of green travel accommodations. In fact, they were recently awarded as the “Most Eco-Friendly Hotel in America.” Not only do they have their own systems to recycle water but they also reuse their own waste. In addition, the hotel is built with solar panels designed for heating the building and conserving energy. It’s no wonder the Las Vegas Palazzo Hotel & Resort is such a high-rated, eco-friendly place to stay. With 40,000,000 tourists last year, other green Las Vegas hotels are catching on.
With the large number of green buildings being built, developing programs and initiatives are another important piece to being sustainable. The Go Green Initiative is one program to watch as they are striving to create a “culture of conservation” within a community of schools, homes, businesses and organizations. The program provides tools and training to teach children to care for their environment so that they can better conserve their natural resources for generations to come. Heightening community awareness so that it leads to eco-friendly habits is the focus of this stewardship program. In addition, they hope to establish standards and procedures for green practices nationwide.
Another initiative is the Green America program. The goal of Green America is “to harness economic power – the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace – to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.” Green America works to empower people to make choices, both purchasing and investing, that are environmentally sustainable and promote social justice. Throughout the US and abroad, the building of sustainable communities and the ending of corporate irresponsibility is the focus of this green initiative.
Throughout the world, many companies are actively seeking solutions to our environmental problems through ecotourism, sustainable building and environmental stewardship. These are examples of how easy it can be for everyone to live, work and play in a more eco-friendly way.
