Trelleborg Supplies Cable Protection to Scottish Offshore Wind Farm
Building on its impressive track record supplying cable protection to offshore wind projects, Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation delivered a range of high-performance cable protection solutions for the Kincardine Offshore Windfarm and the 2MW turbine that started producing power in October 2018.
Installed in quarter three of 2018, Trelleborg manufactured and delivered Distributed Buoyancy Modules (DBM), bend stiffeners and Uraduct® cable and flow line protection for the Scottish pilot project.
Daniel Bate, Renewables Sales Manager within Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation, says: “The region’s desire to enhance and accelerate the development of renewable energy is helping propel innovation and project successes that can be used on future renewable projects. This is an exciting time for the renewables industry, as we see the worldwide demand for renewable energy growing and supporting competitive clean power.
“As a floating structure, the success of the Kincardine project has the potential to unlock new energy opportunities as the technology can be deployed virtually anywhere, regardless of seabed depth.”
Once complete, Kincardine will feature a total of seven floating turbines with individual capacity of 9.6MW each and in total an installed capacity of 50MW. The remaining five turbines are scheduled for installation about 15 kilometers south-east of Aberdeen in Scotland through the first half of 2020.
In floating production environments, subsea electrical power cables are used to inter-connect floating structures on offshore wind farms and also run between the substation (electrical hub of the wind farm) and the shore. Trelleborg’s high performance DBMs and bend limitation products are designed to secure, guide and protect these power cables from excessive movement or bending that can potentially cause fatigue damage.
From cable protection products for the offshore wind sector to tailored buoyancy solutions for the wave and tidal sector, Trelleborg’s offshore and applied technologies operations holds a long-standing commitment to serving the renewables market.
