The Growth of Solar-Powered Affordable Housing & Senior Services in the Bay Area

59 solar installations include the new On Lok Senior Health Building in San Francisco

Affordable housing in the Bay Area is always an issue. For Seniors on fixed incomes it’s particularly important to have access to good quality, affordable housing and services with predictable long-term energy costs for their tight budgets.

Solar makes sense because it provides a predictable and significantly reduced cost for energy; costs that can directly impact the tight budgets of most seniors. Operating funds that previously would have been used for energy can now be used on senior-specific benefits such as medical care, or drop in senior programs.

On Lok’s Newest Solar-Powered Building for Seniors

On Lok, a Bay Area organization serving the Senior community since the early 1970’s has just recently installed solar on their On Lok Senior Health Services building, known as The Dr. William L. Gee House on Bush Street in San Francisco. Two of their other buildings providing affordable housing already have solar installations.

As the Baby Boomers enter the “Senior phase of life”, having services such as those that On Lok provides will become even more essential.
